“[The Lost Forty] makes old Minnesota folk songs feel relevant and alive. …Surely, the ghosts of Minnesota are listening to their songs, reimagined, with pride. …The Lonesome Hours of Winter is a fabulous album.” –The Irish Echo
Lonesome Hours grew out of Miller’s 2016 Minnesota State Arts Board-funded “Lost Forty Project.” The project aimed to reintroduce, revive and reimagine 47 traditional songs collected on wax cylinders in northern Minnesota in 1924. The result was the free online audio archive YouTube videosYouTube videos and a series of song arrangements and YouTube videos by The Lost Forty.
In 2018, The Lost Forty received an Arts Tour grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board to bring this “locally-sourced” music back to the communities it came from with 12 performances in northern Minnesota. Their travels up north have allowed them to meet descendants of the singers heard in their archival source material and to chat with elders who remember the old-time logging camps that played hosts to nights of swapping old Irish songs. They wrap up their 12th Arts Tour performance way up in Roseau, MN the night before their Celtic Junction show!
